PFL Regular Season | Week 20
It was the final week of the PFL season this weekend, with ten teams vying for th eeight playoff spots. Six teams were guaranteed sports, so some needed a bit of help to get in. What wasn’t secured were the Divisional titles for the PFL East and PFL West.
PFL EAST
Adelphia Phoenix 26-10 Landor 96ers
Matt Kelly threw for 404 yards and 2 TDs, along with Jamal Davies getting 102 yards on the ground as the Phoenix overtook the 96ers to top spot in the East. The Phoenix defence contained veteran QB Kurt Sierra and his supporting cast, holding them to 210 total yards on the day. (Frank Bowman just 66).
The 96ers defence held the Phoenix to 3TDs and 3 FGs, when it could have been much worse. The 96ers also lost WB Edgar Jammer for the playoffs, as he nurses a broken collarbone. Disasterous day for the Sixers.
New Chester Knights 17-10 Melborg Giants
A routine performance for Elijah Brooks and co. The Giants have taken their time to gel under a new Head coach and QB combo. Tomkowski played much better, so there will be hope for a big progression next season.
PFL CENTRAL
Oakland Ravens 45-33 Chakota Wasps
Game of the season candidate in Oakland! The Wasps went out to an early 14-0 lead, with Trent Harris throwing darts out there. Tayvon Coles went out early, his replacement journeyman Jared Millard threw a TD to pull things back before he too departed with a concussion. Following a pick six by Ravens’ WB Cory Rivers, third string QB Ted Pearson threw to an eligible receiver- lineman Brian Engelmeier to level the scores at 21.
The Wasps marched down the field in 41 seconds to regain the lead on a 39 yard goal.
THEN- Tayvon Coles returned and broke through the lines for a 76 yard TD on the first scrimmage play of the second half.
The Ravens marched in to 35-27 lead before Harris found Rondell Blackmon for the third time to draw within two. The two-point conversion failed. The Ravens D blacked out the Wasps attack in the 4th Quarter as the Ravens booked the last playoff spot- due to other results going in their favour.
Rochester Trojans 23-13 Tallassea Oilers
The Trojans finished the season with a decent win, to level them up at 9-9 over the 18 games. With Ryan Bruce out, back up QB John Myers threw for 233 yards and two scores. He might just be the starter comewhat September.
PFL NORTH
Caligara Bulldogs 14-27 Harteford Hawks
The Hawks took advantage of a weakened Bulldogs team as they chose to rest starters in the finale. The Hawks managed win number six, but it’s hard to take much from a win against a depleted side. Hawks AMF Jeff Holliday recorded what may have been his last QB Mark (sack) in a remarkable career.
Iomagh Steelers 23-14 Ballymore Tigers
Oh dear! The Ballymore Tigers can;t defend their crown as they gave a dismal showing to the worst team in the league. the woeful Steelers managed to double their win record. Their excuse will be that they missed QB Cam Rodgers, but they should have been so much better than this. Or- perhaps the Steelers were better than we thought?
PFL WEST
Hallas Stars 20-14 San Angelo Miners
Saturday’s prime time game was a winner takes the West matchup. The Stars defence shut out the Miners for the first half and led 20-0 at the half. Chase Hand had thrown two TD passes to Bob Lloyd and they had two field goals.
The Miners came back in the second half, but Brandon Mullen’s two TDs were not enough to get them back in the lead. Mullen ended on a uncharacteristic 14 for 40 for 140 yards. His lowest totals as a Miner. San Angelo had to settle for 5th spot as the Stars rolled as no. 2.
Eregon Eagles 20-13 St. George Sharks
The Sharks missed the playoffs due to a tremendous showing of defence by the Eregon Eagles. Where’s that been all year? Dre Nalen was intercepted three times and the Sharks were off-kilter by multiple blitz schemes used by the Eagles. There will be hope for both teams for next season, but for now, the Sharks will be kicking themselves (or biting themselves, -ed.).
